Cathleen McCarron adopts a strong but understandable Scots accent as she narrates the adventures of Flora Mackie and her travels to the North Pole--from her first journey at age 12 to her last in old age. As an old woman, she meets Whitfield, a young newspaper reporter portrayed by Thomas Judd, who encourages Flora to tell the story of her explorations of the north and entices her to make one last journey there. McCarron uses a variety of Scots accents to differentiate the characters. She gives gruff voices to some of the men, and hard tones to Whitfield. Judd's softer depiction of Whitfield is overshadowed by McCarron's louder recounting of Flora's adventures. Listeners will enjoy hearing about Flora's breathtaking explorations of the farthest and coldest corners of the globe. M.B.K. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2018]
