Author and narrator Atz Kilcher's stories of growing up and living in rural Alaska are brimming with hardship because of its climate and remote location. He is also faced with the challenges of raising domestic animals such as cattle and horses on an Alaska homestead. Add to all that several dysfunctional family relationships, and the author has an enormous supply of material to draw from. Some of the stories about animals may be difficult for some people to listen to. Sprinkled liberally among the stories are a plethora of life lessons Kilcher has learned from his relationships with his father and his children. These get a bit repetitive, and his children receive many apologies for how he treated them, both in childhood and as adults, but Kilcher faces his shortcomings full on.
