This audiobook comes together as a fine espionage thriller, but it takes a while to get there. The story switches between points of view, and it's not clear at first how they relate. They do come together, though, as Pearl Tao, a gifted college student, is stripped of her naïveté about her life and parents, and what they have planned for her future. Narrator Colin Mace does a great job keeping the tension high and the story moving forward. The spy's constant fear of discovery and capture is palpable, and the other characters are also distinct and real. This is the third and final installment of Brookes's series about journalist/British spy Philip Mangan. Newcomers may take a bit longer to catch on to the plot.
