Narrator Brock Thompson delivers an Irish brogue for immortal enforcer Adam Dunne, whose love interest is mortal Victoria Monzelle, an American musician.Thompson excels at Adam's persona, especially his lilting accent. He's equally talented at depicting Adam and Victoria's bedroom scenes. They seem fully connected in their few private moments. However, the thin, reedy voice Thompson chooses for Victoria makes her seem like a weak, timid girl. It's a confusing characterization, given Zanetti's strong female heroine, who shows deep caring and bravery in a frightening new world. When reading prose, Thompson accents every word equally, which creates a curiously flat tone that doesn't always match the perilous events. Nonetheless, Thompson's rich timbre makes up for some of the narrative challenges in this series continuation. C.A. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2017]
