Hillary Huber's narration of this wide-ranging audiobook is rendered with her usual high quality--her voice is nimble and capable, with an appealing pace and a fine tone. That said, this family saga, while intriguing and creative in content, does not necessarily lend itself well to the audiobook format, regardless of the narrator's skill. The novel's transitions are abrupt, and details are easily lost as listeners try to situate themselves in each new time period or place. Characters are developed in such a subtle way that it can be difficult to discern one from another, or even decide which is important enough to try to figure out at all. Huber's talents work well, as always, but the audiobook itself makes for a laborious listen. L.B.F. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2018]
