Narrator Lucy Paterson's slightly husky and sometimes dispassionate voice weaves an atmosphere of Icelandic chill. The murders are shocking, and the lack of graphic description adds to that chill. Prepare to spend hours with nerves jangling. A woman is murdered at home, and the only witness is her small daughter, Magret, hiding beneath her bed. Action alternates between the police investigation, with child psychologist Freyja coaxing details from Magret, and a seemingly unconnected storyline featuring Karl, an amateur radio ham. Listeners will be kept guessing as pieces slot into place, and the denouement more than makes up for having endured some numerical code read aloud and repeated. This is the start of a new series featuring Freyja, and one hopes Paterson will narrate as well. C.A.T. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2018]
