Blaedel's richly detailed novel, the third in her Louise Rick police procedural series to reach American audiences, offers both a captivating mystery and a unique look at Copenhagen's criminal underbelly. Narrator Christine Lakin's clear diction and brisk pace help the listener navigate the complex plot featuring sex trafficking and abandoned infants, which ultimately weaves together for a satisfying conclusion. Lakin effectively uses tone and pacing to convey drama and suspense, especially the graphic descriptions of brutality as the action builds and the criminals are uncovered. Lakin captures the female and child characters particularly well, but her attempts at accents for some of the male actors are not as successful. Nonetheless, this riveting plot and overall skillful presentation will leave listeners hoping for more from Blaedel and Lakin. M.O.B. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine [Published: FEBRUARY 2018]
