High school junior Brooke Winters anticipates changes at her new, more challenging school. But she never imagines the real-world tests she'll face. As Brooke learns that her mother has murdered her abusive father, narrator Stephanie Einstein portrays Brooke's rapidly changing feelings: panic, confusion, relief that her mother is alive, and shock at viewing her father's body. Roller-coaster feelings continue throughout the story, and Einstein reflects them all. She mirrors the emotions of a young woman who has witnessed abuse most of her life and has been traumatized by the murder. Einstein voices Brooke's complex reactions as her mother goes to prison, the family disintegrates, and a friendship deepens into love before Brooke's lies threaten its destruction.
