Frankie Corzo offers a compassionate narration of this surreal and intensely emotional audiobook. As the novel opens, Isabel meets her late father-in-law on her wedding day, the Day of the Dead. Omar has returned from the beyond to make amends with his wife and son, and this magical request provides the backbone of the story. Corzo is an able narrator with a gentle voice and a skilled treatment of dialogue. That said, the novel makes frequent leaps between time periods and plotlines, which often make listening a challenge regardless of Corzo's mellifluous voice. The struggles surrounding questions of immigration, borders, and redemption are compelling, and Corzo works effectively to inspire empathy and compassion.
