Former NEW YORK TIMES reporter, now freelance, Jack McMorrow takes listeners on a heartbreaking but spirited journey through rural Maine as he researches an article about teenagers having babies. Narrator Michael Smith's delivery of the local accents, which combine traditional New England and rural inflections, sound authentic, while phone conversations have a sound all their own. Colorful descriptions of nature and food add atmosphere as McMorrow focuses on the tragic story of Missy Hewitt. Smith's best creation is Claire, an ex-Marine whose unique voice grabs listeners' attention and admiration. A dash of romance when McMorrow reunites with Roxanne, his girlfriend, provides levity. As the action escalates, it's difficult to anticipate what direction the conclusion will take. McMorrow's latest adventure is well worth the listener's time.
