Unlike the stagecoach that the main character eventually finds herself in, narrator Pilar Witherspoon gives listeners a smooth ride from London to Philadelphia to western Montana. Violet Mitchell never imagined she would be as far from English high society as Butte. Searching for her father and the money her brothers need leads her to Morgan Callahan's hidden silver mine and a gruff, bearlike man who awakens her reluctant interest. Witherspoon gives Violet a low, punctilious British accent and portrays Morgan with a growling Western drawl without its being overly drawn out. Witherspoon is equally skilled at switching from masculine to feminine character voices. At times, her low-voiced narration lacks Lindsey's urgency. But the engrossing story and Witherspoon's natural character voices will keep listeners fully engaged. C.A. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2018]
