What a pleasure it is to listen to narrator Elizabeth Knowelden as she navigates this story of matriarchal terror. Her diction, tone, and use of accents are all top tier. Best of all is her ability to inhabit the characters, whether it's troubled DI Amy Winter or her birth mother, Lillian, a manipulative incarcerated serial killer. Knowelden's narration is so convincing that listeners may ignore some dubious plot points about Amy's past and present. Author Caroline Mitchell, a former DI, peppers this police procedural with memorable details as she cleverly connects two plotlines--one about a kidnapped girl, the other about locating corpses--into one tense confrontation. The bad news: The audiobook ends on a cliff-hanger. The good news: Knowelden narrates the sequel. R.W.S. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2019]
