Former detective Cass Raines's persistence and wittiness make this audiobook a great experience from start to finish. What's more, narrator Shari Peele gives an excellent reading. At its core, Tracy Clark's mystery focuses on Raines's search for the murderer of Father Ray, whom she called Pop, who was found dead along with a gang member with no apparent connection to the priest. Of course, there's more to the story, including the obligatory former colleague who refuses to give Raines's theories any credibility. As the two battle over how the investigation should proceed, Peele delivers the dialogue flawlessly, using distinct voices for each character and an astute sense of pacing. As a result, and despite book's somewhat too pat ending, this is a thoroughly enjoyable listen. D.J.S. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2019]
