Narrator Beverley A. Crick has the listener experiencing the devastation that Hugh Deveraux, Earl of Hastings, feels when he finds out that all he has inherited from his beloved father is a mountain of debt. Then a wealthy tradesman blackmails Hugh into courting his daughter, Eliza. Crick helps the listener visualize Eliza's first meeting with Hugh, which takes place when her dog escapes from his bath. Needing money for his sisters' dowries, Hugh marries Eliza. Crick brings out Eliza's sweetness and the coolness that Hugh's oldest sister shows to her. Realizing that Eliza had nothing to do with her father's schemes, Hugh starts to fall in love with her but fears she'll discover his duplicity during their relationship.
