Ashford McNab narrates a powerful story set in 1820 but that reverberates with issues that are more current. Eli Dawes has returned, seemingly from the dead, after the Battle of Waterloo; Rose Hayward has managed to make a comfortable life for herself as an artist and teacher. Both Rose and Eli suffered severely traumatizing events in their pasts, and McNab skillfully balances the complex set of emotions the experience as they confront and master their respective pain. Eli and Rose are always portrayed as whole and complete individuals, which is a credit to both McNab and the author. Secondary characters are fully and distinctly voiced by McNab, and it's easy to distinguish a student of the Haverhall School for Young Ladies from a servant.
