Narrator Malcolm Hillgartner sets just the right pace for this slow-build Chilean crime story. Private investigator Heredia barely makes ends meet in the apartment he shares with his cat, Simenon, in post-Pinochet Santiago. Simenon converses with him, but this is no cozy cat mystery. When news reaches Heredia that a journalist and former lover has been murdered, he finds himself up against dangerous adversaries. Thankfully, he also has loyal and resourceful friends in Dagoberto, an aging police officer; Anselmo, the news vendor; and Mr. Stevens, his blind neighbor who is more than he appears. Heredia needs all the allies he can muster when leads start pointing to arms dealing and chemical weapons. Hillgartner adds just enough Spanish inflection to his narration to enhance the atmosphere.
