ROMIETTE AND JULIO

Are Romiette Cappelle and Julio Montague like their Shakespearean namesakes? A gang in their high school strongly objects to their interracial relationship, eventually kidnapping them and putting them in grave danger. Narrator Johnson is splendid, capturing the range of accents of Cincinnati’s Latino and black communities. Supporting characters, such as Romi’s astrology-loving girlfriend and her TV news anchor dad, are lively and believable. Author and narrator sustain suspense until the last minute as Draper’s text is enhanced by this excellent audio production. All ages will enjoy a new look at a timeless classic. S.G.B.
