Does language influence thought? Should the "rules" of language be enforced, or should we cease trying to "tame" our language? Lane Green's audiobook presents a compelling history of the development of languages. Listeners who find themselves struggling over the "rules" of grammar (should split infinitives be avoided entirely?) will appreciate Greene's discussion on the origin of these structures, as well as consideration of the nature of new communication systems (home devices like Amazon's Echo) and how they impact further language evaluation. Greene delivers his own work, and he doesn't sound like an experienced narrator. His intonation has little variety in tone, unspooling like an extended lecture. The audiobook could also have benefited from better production editing. S.P.C. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: JANUARY 2019]
