Given her previous experience as a narrator, it's not surprising that author Mary Robinette Kowal expertly voices her own alternative- history sci-fi novel. After a meteorite blasts through earth's atmosphere, it destroys the eastern coast of the United States, setting off cataclysmic changes. Mathematician and former WWII WASP pilot Elma hopes to put her skills to use as an astronaut--if she can get past the sexist attitudes of the 1950s. From worldwide news announcers to Elma's Southern drawl and everything in between, Kowal provides an exemplary listening experience. Well matched to her text, Kowal's vocal abilities and narrative style firmly place the listener in the story. Listening to this performance, one experiences the gamut of emotions felt by the characters. A.L.S.M. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: OCTOBER 2019]
