Peter Noble gives a meditative narration of this diary of a novice shepherd in Sweden. Axel Lindén leaves the city for what he hopes will be a simpler and greener life on a communal farm. The short entries are snapshots of his days and routines with the sheep--endless repairing of fences, lots of wet and cold weather. Noble's steady tone conveys Lindén's ponderings and meanderings. At one point, Lindén muses, "A fairly large part of the work is solitary and fairly boring, gray and uneventful, so shouldn't my notes about it be a bit dull as well?" Whether listeners agree may depend upon their own interest in and patience for Lindén's philosophizing on farm life. J.M.D. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine [Published: NOVEMBER 2018]
