When lovely Christina Barclay is accidently injured while trespassing in the gardens of reclusive, handsome, and deaf inventor Oliver Hawkes, Christina's parents make the most of the situation. Narrator Carmen Rose expertly captures the ensuing love story of two lonely people brought together by circumstances not of their making. Rose's hesitant voice is perfect for a man who lost his hearing as a young adult rather than from birth; it's just imperfect enough to be convincing. She is equally adroit in her portrayal of Christina's greedy parents, particularly her mother, whose whine and delicious hauteur are oddly captivating.
