Seán Barrett excels at crafting his storytelling to reflect each part of this mystery, including its wide emotional range. Gloucestershire pathologist John Eisenmenger is informed by a whistleblower, whom some consider unbalanced, that patients are being routinely murdered. He cautiously approaches Detective Chief Inspector Beverley Wharton, his sometimes lover and a feisty, take-no-prisoners woman, about these suspicions. Barrett intensifies his delivery as evidence mounts. Much needed subtle humor is skillfully incorporated, and Barrett's best character portrayal is the blustering and unsupportive Superintendent Lambert.
