Susie Berneis narrates this mystery involving a community of Shakers in 1790s Maine. After having sent his pregnant wife, Lydia, and their six adopted children to a Shaker community for refuge, Will Rees now hurries to their sides. Once there, he is faced with a death he views as suspicious and Shakers who view him as an unwelcome outsider. When he discovers another body, also a questionable death, Berneis makes listeners sympathize with Rees's dilemma, turning an imperfect man into someone listeners connect with. The choice of unidentifiable accents for certain characters sometimes proves confusing, but it doesn't distract from the overall listening experience. This audiobook proves to be a fascinating look at early American history. V.M.G. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: APRIL 2019]
