Narrator Simon Vance immediately places the listener into the action of Dumas's energetic historical adventure. The story takes place during the French Revolution and involves a plot to rescue Marie Antoinette. Vance's narration greatly contributes to the excitement of the novel. He has a consistent serious tone when narrating the events of the story; however, he transforms his voice in the dialogue. Young Maurice Lindey speaks in a confident, sincere voice that marks him as a hero from the beginning. He especially stands out against the gruff colloquial voices of various supporting characters. Marie Antoinette speaks with both passion and reserve, and Vance's characterization elicits sympathy for her. Overall, Vance's compelling performance draws the listener into the audiobook's tumultuous events. D.M.W. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: MAY 2019]
