LGBTQ+ activist Jacob Tobia narrates their own coming-of-age memoir, focusing on childhood through their college graduation. As a child, Tobia was the frequent victim of gender policing, in their case, being forced into traditionally masculine pursuits and aesthetics. As a teen, they came out as a gay man, although they knew that this identity wasn't entirely accurate. It wasn't until college that they felt free to wholly embrace their nonbinary gender identity. Tobia is a gifted speaker. Their voice is playful and likable, and the listening experience seems akin to having a conversation with a friend. The story is peppered with melancholy moments, which Tobia delivers with requisite sobriety. As a whole, though, this audiobook is fun--full of Tobia's laugh-out-loud observations and snarky pop culture references. S.P. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: MAY 2019]
