Narrator Pamela Almand's audible composure works well with the thoughtful writing of this seasoned author and professor. Though Susan Gubar's literary perspective could have sounded erudite, Almand's performance gives listeners access to the warmth and humility that pervade this autobiographical account of a late-life partnership. The author is at peace in the face of physical decline in her marriage. She's in total control of both her writing and her commitment to her husband, whose medical issues and requirements are consuming. Gubar's husband is also a literature professor, so the audio is full of fascinating literary references that describe how cultures around the world have portrayed love between senior citizens. Graphic depictions of the physical challenges both faced are a reminder that, in good times and bad, late-life love is different. T.W. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: OCTOBER 2019]
