Narrator Kathleen McInerney is assigned the tricky task of voicing duplicity. She uses the honest and familiar tone of a best friend to voice Jane Harris, a stay-at-home mom who is grieving the accidental death of her teenage daughter Mary. But there is a darker Jane, who emerges in subtle tones punctuated by emotional outbursts. Teen characters figure heavily as Jane investigates Mary's death, and McInerney deftly captures their whiny and defensive undertones. You can practically hear Betsy, Jane's surviving teen daughter, scowl. Using yet another voice to represent Jane as she re-emerges in public, McInerney weaves multiple psyches that purposefully leave listeners in the dark until the gripping end.
