Bowen has created an elaborate murder mystery that spans a number of years and an astonishing cast of characters. Add to all of that an involved explanation of DNA, and there is an excellent of chance of losing your way as the tale unfolds. But thanks to narrator Paul Matthews, listeners stay right on course and better comprehend some issues that add to the story's intrigue. Inspector Bewick must use strong-arm tactics, but he also shows compassion to the mentally ill person who ultimately unravels the clues. The two women vying for Bewick are well distinguished by Matthews, and the dash of romance rounds out this long piece. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2000, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG/SEP 00]
