Listeners travel to Regency England in the company of Bow Street Runner John Pickett and his new wife, Julia, through the excellent narration of Joel Froomkin. Summoned to the countryside by an anonymous letter, the Picketts take the honeymoon they never had as cover for John's activities. Soon after their arrival, listeners experience Julia's horror as she witnesses a man being pushed off a cliff. He manages to croak out a couple words to Pickett before dying. Froomkin deftly navigates the speech patterns and myriad accents of characters from numerous regions and various social stations, each of whom has a unique persona. Froomkin's impressive narration assists the strong writing in conveying the atmosphere of nineteenth-century England. V.M.G.
