Narrator Joel Leslie exposes the hidden feelings of vicar Ben Sedgwick and ship captain Phillip Dacre in this nineteenth-century romance. Leslie excels at digging into the different reservations Ben and Phillip wrestle with before surrendering to their mutual affection. Ben worries about jilting his ill fiancée, while Phillip can't forget a tragic shipboard liaison. Ben and Phillip are deliciously delineated. Ben's an earnest-sounding young man whose practical nature naturally veers from the dramatic, while Phillip's voice has a hoarse deepness that is both serious and sensual. Phillip's three children are less well characterized, especially his daughter, whose nasal voice whines unpleasantly. Leslie could also be more crisp in his diction. Nonetheless, Cat Sebastian's series opener makes for a heartfelt audiobook full of tender moments. C.A. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2019]
