Narrators Christopher Lane and Emily Sutton-Smith must work two timelines in this audiobook. The body of a poetry teacher has been found 20 years after he disappeared from a prep school campus. Lane and Sutton-Smith portray Ian and Andi Copeland as teen sweethearts and wary adults. Lane portrays the adult Ian in a cavalier tone full of privilege, stopping just short of arrogance. In the high school scenes, the petulance Lane gives Ian nails his youth and angst. Sutton-Smith creates a rich character as she juxtaposes the steely adult Andi has become with the naïve and vulnerable high school girl who was in over her head with her teacher. Lauren Ezzo portrays Ian and Andi's daughter, Cassidy, with bright pluck as her senior class investigates the mysterious death that threatens her family.
