Narrator Susannah Jones delivers the adventures of the vine witch, Elena, as she seeks to break the seven-year curse that turned her into a toad. She is determined to find the source of the curse. Jones reveals fondness for Elena and her aunt as she describes the magic that is a significant aspect of the "art" of wine making. Set in France at the turn of the twentieth century, the story is reminiscent of a fairy tale, complete with an evil witch, a dastardly inspector of magic who is out to get Elena, and two handsome males.
