Narrators Raphael Corkhill and Saskia Maarleveld bring much needed energy to an otherwise lackluster historical romance. Maisie is determined to be involved in Scotland's suffragette movement, but her habit of winding up in danger leads Niall Campbell into her life to play rescuer and, soon after, fiancé. But when Niall's sister is kidnapped, he must dance to the villain's tune, and he and Maisie are forced apart by time and distance for much of the audiobook. Listeners may find themselves unsatisfied with a romance that never believably develops and a dragging pace were it not for Corkhill and Maarleveld's gorgeous performances. Together, they juggle many characters, each one immediately identifiable and subtly infused with varying degrees of intensity. A.L. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: MARCH 2020]
