Agatha Raisin is the twenty-first century's answer to Miss Marple. Like Miss Marple, she solves murders in a small English village, and she belongs to the intuitive, rather than the analytical, school of amateur sleuthing. Unlike the famous heroine of the cozy mystery, Agatha Raisin cares about attracting men and gets a public relations job in London when living in the country becomes too boring. Listeners will enjoy following Agatha as she looks for secret passages, interviews suspects, and does battle with the local constabulary. This is a lively, literate story read with the usual dash by Donada Peters. The characterizations are subtle but manage to give us a clear picture of each villager. The story proceeds swiftly and enjoyably, thanks to tight plotting and a beautiful reading. D.L.G. (c) AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine [Published: AUG/ SEP 04]
