In 1960s’ Philadelphia four young girls form a precision drill team called the Justus girls. Thirty years later one of them is murdered, and the remaining three vow to find out who killed their friend. This first novel is gutsy and hilarious, obviously deserving the critical acclaim it received. To put it mildly, Lizan Mitchell is not a narrator; she is an entire community of raucous, earthy, sad, exuberant, wise, and steadfast African-Americans. No matter how imaginative the listener’s mind’s ear (there’s a new turn of phrase), he or she could never have created the audio pleasure these cassettes bring. P.R.
