Narrator Leon Nixon brings a serious tone and clear enunciation to this memoir about Herb Carnegie, a Canadian hockey player who was shut out of a career in the NHL because of racism. Nixon's narration is appropriate as he details the life of Carnegie, covering his hockey years and his ultimate fulfillment in golf, business, and a character-building program for youth. Nixon's tone carries just the right amount of emotion. The audiobook is really two stories in one. The second half provides daughter Bernice's perspective. Adenrele Ojo narrates this section in a dramatic voice. Both narrators do a fine job of describing how the subjects feel at many points in their lives: like "a fly in a pail of milk."
