Scotsman Angus King is a natural choice to narrate this chronicle of Hugh "Shuggie" Bain, a boy growing up in 1980s Glasgow. King's thick Scottish accent is evocative of the setting, and his vivid characterizations of both male and female characters of all ages aid with differentiation of their colorful personalities. Narrating with both whimsy and gravitas, King captures Shuggie's rough life, sensitively depicting his gentle nature, as well as his struggles with his beleaguered alcoholic mother, Agnes, as she sinks further into addiction. King's relaxed pacing fosters the progression of the story while acclimating listeners' ears to his Scottish accent. S.E.G. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: NOVEMBER 2020]
