Narrator Ann Marie Gideon brings listeners back to Summer Island, a small island in the Great Lakes. Zack Sheppard, a fisherman, tumbles down a flight of stairs, badly injuring his leg, just as his Aunt Dahlia departs on the last ferry for a vacation before being iced in. Gideon successfully expresses Zack frustration with both his injury and what he feels is his aunt's betrayal for not returning to care for him. Zack ends up staying with Suzanne Quinlan, his ex-girlfriend's friend. Gideon has the listener experiencing both the tension and the closeness that Zack and Suzanne feel while being confined together.
