This short story is ideal for multiple narrators as it is composed solely of a series of letters. Julia Whelan starts the correspondence as Carrie finds letters to her husband from a woman with whom he is having an affair. Whelan sounds convincingly apologetic when Carrie writes to David, the husband of the "other woman," hoping to find letters from her husband so she might gauge how deeply the two are involved. George Newbern delivers David's letters, becoming more relaxed and expressive as the two develop a dialogue. The two bring warmth and affection to the narration as the characters develop a relationship. The letters of the spouses are less extensive and not presented in alternating chapters, but Daniels and Rosenberg provide a glimpse of the lovers' intensity.
