Madhuri Shekar’s play is a truly original and entertaining genre-bending story of a New Delhi mother who is desperately trying to steer her Americanized daughter into a proper marriage. It’s full of wonderfully comic lines like “Do not use that American voice with me” from the award-winning breakout playwright. When the daughter thinks she’s found the perfect match, the fine vocal symmetry between British-Indian actress Rita Wolf and American newcomer Annapurna Sriram intensifies as the story evolves from a simple rom-com into a heart-pounding ghostly thriller. As the story is told through phone calls, voicemails, and direct, natural dialogue, the fine performances and suspense never waver. This production is all that contemporary audio drama should be.
