This character-driven novel takes place largely in contemporary Sydney. Australian narrator Maria Angelico is familiar with the varied accents found in all areas of the country. Three voices tell the story, providing diverse perspectives on relationships, friendships, and the question of who owns the house on Dalhousie Street. Angelico presents her listeners with a youthful, sometimes angry Rosie Gennaro; then she gives us Martha, Rosie's stepmother, a mature woman embittered by life's little cruelties; lastly, we hear about Jimmy Hailler, a rolling-stone sort of fellow who lands in Sydney and adjusts to life as a grown up. There are numerous secondary characters, many of whom have appeared in earlier books. Keeping everyone straight is difficult at times. Nonetheless, this production is worth listening to for those who enjoy love stories, can understand Australian accents and vocabulary, and appreciate a well-written story with a strong sense of place.
