Sarah Broom's chronicle of life in a historic yet poor section of New Orleans is an audiobook that captivates the listener from its first words to the end. The National Book Award-winning memoir holds one's attention because of Broom's vivid prose and narrator Bahni Turpin's flawless performance. Although the audiobook focuses on the physical home where Broom was raised, whose roots go back a century, there is far more here. The author skillfully weaves stories from many of her descendants into a rich tapestry, and takes listeners through the fascinating aspects of their lives. Turpin's delivery, pace, nuanced tones, and ability to provide pitch-perfect accents for each of Broom's relatives enhance the audiobook, allowing listeners aural insight into each character. D.J.S.
