This entertaining audiobook sounds like a classic gumshoe novel, making Johnny Heller's gravelly timbre ideal for its narration. The story opens when a mortally injured person appears at a Chicago bar at 11:59 on New Year's Eve and dies--but not before handing criminal lawyer John J. Malone a mysterious numbered key. From there, the story gets screwier and the memorable characters more bizarre. Heller's methodical yet somewhat droll delivery makes the audiobook thoroughly entertaining. His ability to create personalities through tone and inflection is critical to maintaining the pace of the story, particularly his portrayal of Police Captain von Flanagan and the eccentric Mona McClane.
