Author and narrator Marie Mockett takes listeners on an eye-opening journey through American farm country, focusing on a group of Christian farmers who harvest wheat. After inheriting her family's Nebraska farm, Mockett, a Japanse-American raised in California, set out to learn more about the Christians who'd been working the farm for years. Her narration is open and curious, though sometimes a bit formal; her rhythm is occasionally jarring enough to be distracting. In earnest, though somewhat meandering, prose, Mockett explores cultural differences, the history of farming, Christian theology, and her relationship to the land. She's at her worst when generalizing and extrapolating about groups of people and at her best, both as narrator and author, when recounting personal conversations that shifted her point of view.
