Narrators Virginia Rose and Carly Robins play out their roles as tattoo artist Jamie and youth case worker Sierra in seamless alternation. Rose is spot-on as Jamie, using her naturally lower register to represent Jamie's serious, cautious nature. She connects listeners to Jamie's vulnerable side with a tremor that appears in moments of high emotion. Robins's voice is entirely different, and the contrast effectively distinguishes the two female protagonists. Robins's velvety, angelic voice paints Sierra's youthful energy and big dreams. Her phrasing for Sierra comes in short, smooth bursts like small snatches of song. As Sierra and Jamie build trust, the narrators pass the story back and forth with remarkable ease, skillfully leading listeners to their happy ending.
