Dragonsdawn, the first book in the Pern series, is a futuristic story of risk, romance and adventure. Allison Green has attempted to bring the heroic cast of characters to life by investing each with a voice print. It is an ambitious undertaking which falters. The characters are myriad; the voices Greene creates are often hard to understand and identify. The performance is further marred by an uneven quality of sound and awkward breaks between cassettes. Occasionally, however, Greene reads brilliantly. At these times, compelled by the drama of the storyline. she speaks clearly and quickly, trusting the power of McCaffrey's story to carry the listener into Pern's lush landscape.
