In this learned, inspiring historical novel, a cynical Martin Luther King, Jr., look-alike is contrasted with the real Rev. King during the latter's last years. Those of us who witnessed Montgomery, Chicago and Selma will recognize the book's moving authenticity. Leland Gantt reads the story of the talented near-derelict whose resemblance to the Civil Rights leader results in his becoming official stand-in. André Braugher narrates the alternating chapters of King's internal monologues. Both are fine performers who do ample justice to Johnson's graceful prose. Gantt excels at characterization, and Braugher at clarifying the agonizing conflicts of conscience weighing upon a very human man striving to perfect himself for the sake of his movement.
