The talented and prolific Simon Vance brings his exceptional abilities to his performance of this audiobook, the first in a new series. Vance's characters are distinct, and his pacing enjoyable. His English accent is ever so appropriate for this story of family tension and murder set in Salisbury, England. Detective Chief Inspector Mackenzie Jones is called out on Christmas Eve to respond to a quadruple killing. The trail leads to a surviving family member who is charged with the crime. The suspect's wife hires P.I. Atticus Priest, a brilliant but cashiered cop, to help clear her husband's name. There are interesting subplots as well, Jones's rocky marriage and her past with Priest among them. This audiobook is engaging both in story and narration.
