Justine Eyre narrates a charming steampunk romance loosely inspired by "Cinderella." When Emmeline Castle O'Shea is named spokesperson for the International Shifter Rights Organization, her personal nemesis, Detective Oliver Reed, is assigned to protect her due to threats she has received. Eyre does a credible job with the two main characters, showing how their relationship slowly changes from adversarial to romantic; she also creates sympathetic portrayals of two strong individuals who are aware of their own worth. The secondary characters, however, have a tendency to become somewhat indistinguishable due to Eyre's inability to reliably create more than a handful of different vocal characterizations, especially when it comes to male characters.
