Allyson Ryan capably narrates this contemporary mystery set in Ohio. While jogging in the park, PI Roxanne Weary stumbles upon a murder staged to look like an accident. This is the fourth mystery featuring the hard-bitten, hard-drinking, hardworking sleuth, who is bisexual. Ryan captures both her bravado and her vulnerability as she discovers one clue after another. Secondary characters are differentiated subtly, yet their emotional quandaries are readily apparent. Characters include religious zealots, abused wives, lax police officers, and unhappy lovers--all portrayed credibly by Ryan. Like this heroine, her performance is vigorous and pragmatic. In sum, she delivers a polished performance. D.L.G. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine [Published: OCTOBER 2020]
